Video Poker Hand Ranking
Although the rules of online video poker are very basic and easy to understand, a firm grasp of the hand hierarchy is important when choosing which of your cards to discard and replace.
The hand hierarchy in video poker is not much different to its casino poker cousin but some variants mean that slight changes will alter which cards you hold or discard.
The basic format of hand strength of video poker is as follows: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full House, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pairs and pairs.
This is the set format throughout most variants, although in the Jacks or Better format, you can only win with a pair if they are the values of Jacks or better. The Tens or Better format runs along the same lines, but a win with a pair is only possible with a pair of tens or higher.
Depending on the variation of the video poker game you decide to play, the odds of a four-of-a-kind hand are improved if you get four aces as opposed to four sevens, for instance. These are the better variants to play if you wish to receive higher monetary returns for better hands.
The great thing when understanding the betting hands and odds is there is a table on the screen for every variant so it would be beneficial to read it before you begin a game. These odds and hands will help you to decide which hands you would be preferably aiming for and this will alter your mentality when deciding which cards you will be holding or discarding during the game.
Nevertheless, don’t worry because anyone who has played cards before knows that a three of a kind is higher ranked than two pairs. It is all common sense, really.
