Learning Blackjack Odds
Learning the odds will help you when you are playing blackjack and give you a better chance of winning. The problem that the casual player faces is in not knowing the odds, therefore giving the house an advantage.
To help you, and to reduce the house’s advantage, we can take a look at the odds when a six deck card game is played, which is what the majority of casinos play.
A standard deck is 52 cards and within it there are 4 suits, hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs. The suits are not important in blackjack but the card values are. The 10, J, Q and K all represent 10 in value. In total, six decks give you 312 cards.
Let’s say you’re in a game playing two hands and the dealer gives you a six/five in one hand and a seven/four in another. The other four other players at the table with you have been dealt their cards and have each taken an extra card. This gives you the premise that a 10 value card is highly likely to be the next card and you need to decide which hand to hit and which to stand. There have been a total of 17 cards dealt to this point. Thirty percent of 312 means that every next card has a 30% chance of being a 10. Take out the 17% and it becomes 32%.
The odds of getting a 10 now become 942-1 against and 2-1 that the next card WON’T be a 10.
