Basic Blackjack Rules – Splitting a pair
During a game you may turn up a pair of sixes or a pair of sevens. It doesn’t matter except that turning up a pair gives you a chance to split.
Splitting a pair is the term used and it is very simple to play. A pair of sixes gives you a score of 12 and you may want to play that hand or you can let the dealer know that you want to split the hand. You now have two hands that you are able to play. You should not split every pair that you get as a pair of nines gives you 18 or 10s give you 20, both very strong hands, so think twice about that one. A pair of aces is a brilliant hand and casinos recognize this. Some casinos will only let you draw one card while others will not pay blackjack, if you were to draw a 10. They consider the hand to be a 21. Another thing to know is that some casinos will let you re-split the hands were you to draw another pair of aces.
To let the dealer know that you want to split when playing a face-down game then turn your cards up in front of your bet. You now have two hands and therefore must bet on the second hand which must be equal to the value of your first bet. The dealer will play each hand in turn to a finish.
Some casinos, in the event of another pair will let you re-split to four hands, if you wish but once again you must bet on the hands.
Normally you can re-split three times but some casinos have strict rules on splitting while others will let you split without any limits. It is entirely up to you if you want to split.
