Basic Blackjack Rules – Hit or Stand

When you are in a game and you have received your first two cards with the value not reaching 21 or if it’s a very small total, what do you do?

Simple. You hit. Not the person beside you or the dealer but the cards. A hit is when you take an extra card from the dealer in the hope that it will make you reach 21. To let the dealer know that you want an extra card, simply tap the table behind your cards. This is how to do it in a face-up game. If the game is being played with the cards facing down then you hold your cards with one hand and scrape the table lightly. The card is placed in front of your bet and you can look at the card but it must not leave the table. Add it to your total and if you bust then turn your cards over.

Achieving the best possible score from your cards is your objective. You will want to let the dealer know that you do not want any more cards. This is called a stand and to do this you do not need to stand up but rather wave your hand horizontally above your cards.

To do this in a face-down game is different in that you place your two cards face down under your chips. Remember you must not touch your chips or move them.

This may be a little difficult to the first timer but it becomes second nature after a few games and you are always able to watch other people play and see how they do it.

These two terms hit and stand are the most basic rules in blackjack and the easiest to understand and learn but there are some more.
