Basic Blackjack Rules – European No Hole Rule

When you go to a European casino it is a little different, as indeed in some other casinos also, in that the dealer will play his hand with only one card, face up to himself. You and the other players will be dealt your two cards first. You then play your hand until you are either satisfied with it and stand or you bust in which case you lose. When all the players have played their hands then the dealer will play his. This is known as The European No Hole Rule.

In the game of blackjack you might see printed on tables the phrase, dealer hits on soft 17.

What’s a soft 17 you may wonder, and for the first time player it is something that you should know. Imagine you are at the table and the first two cards have been dealt. You have an Ace and a six. This is a soft 17 as you have the possibility of two possible values. Remember an Ace can be a one or an 11, therefore giving you a value of seven or 17. You must decide if you want to hit on it or stand. If you take another card, for example a nine, then added to the 17 count you would be busted at 26 so the ace now counts as a 1 giving you a total of 16. Once again you can hit or stand.

The term soft means that you are able to draw another card knowing that you will not bust. The opposite of this is a hard 17 which is an Ace, six and a 10 value card meaning that the ace can only have one possible value, in this case a one.

Knowing these terms can help you when you want to select a table to play
